Enuff Z'Nuff, y'all.
New rule: Anyone who uses the word “hipster” as a derogatory noun also has to provide a definition of what the term means. (The only person who gets a pass is Carles.) Seriously, I’ve heard everyone from people buying million-dollar condos in Williamsburg to bedbug-ridden Bushwick artists to Agyness Deyn to Last Night’s Party denizens to, uh, people who never leave their house because they’re exhausted from blogging all day described as such. Serious question: Is “hipster” just a new code word for “white people whose cultural tastes are a bit intimidating”?
I’d say no. It’s the code word for those who do not fully understand the reasoning behind their tastes and the reasons they are significant both now and in the past. Their taste may be intimidating, but they have no clue why the things they like are good or how they became known as good.
